Currently, more than eight hundred elderly and disabled persons receive a home delivered lunch each day, Monday through Friday. A Registered Dietitian directs the program, and supervises the preparation of the meals each day.

Therapeutic diets are also available through the program. This hot meal is the main meal of the day for most of the recipients, and for some, contact with the volunteer delivering the meal is the only consistent visit they
receive. The Home Delivered Meal Program could not succeed without the support of 110+ volunteers willing to
deliver meals on a regular basis. Many of these volunteers are older persons themselves, providing vital community service in their retirement.

From it’s modest origins in an unused hospital building, the agency has developed over the last thirty nine years to become the major provider of nutritional services to the elderly and disabled population of Lackawanna County, serving approximately 800 meals per day.

The emphasis on the elderly is very appropriate in a county that ranks as one of the highest concentrations of older persons in the nation. The percentage of elderly in this Northeastern Pennsylvania Community is twice the national average. The main city in the county, Scranton, illustrates this high percentage, with over one-fourth of its residents being Sixty years of age or older.
